TUESDAY, 9/19: Skills employers want & collaboration task: French & Raven's Five (plus one) Types of Power
We worked in teams to create a product that will teach the class about one of the Five (actually six) Types of Power from a landmark 1959 study by French and Raven. The team mini-lessons will continue at the start of next period.

Collaboration is the work of a team to identify / clarify / solve problems in ways that are better than what they could have achieved individually. Effective collaboration is able to tap the diverse abilities and ideas that each of the members of the team bring, without any one person dominating the group to the point that these individual contributions would be lost. Clear goals, timelines and communication are important to accomplishing a collaborative task. This means respecting a clear process of getting ideas out there, narrowing them down, and figuring out which is best and how to accomplish it within the resources available. The challenge is to keep the group focused on the task and not on individual agendas or power struggles that could derail the ability to complete the project or task at all.

FRIDAY, 9/15: Why humans create organizations and governments; Distinguishing between power and politics
We did group work around these questions, took notes, and completed an "Art of the Sentence" summary statement about both core questions and turned them in as exit tickets at the end of class.
WEDNESDAY, 9/13: Finished syllabus, brainstorm & posters: why do humans create organizations and governments? What is power and what is politics?
We will build on this lesson next time, with a collaborative exercise and, possibly, a discussion (time depending).
MONDAY, 9/11: More course introduction & getting to know one another; Letter to Mr. Hausman (finish it up, as homework)
The main task in class was to write a letter introducing yourself to me, either in JupiterEd, or written in Google Docs and uploaded to Jupiter. If you submitted most of it electronically, but needed to finish a few questions at home, written on paper, we said that was fine. Turn it in on Wednesday.
HOMEWORK: Get the Parent Contact Info & Syllabus Signature Sheet PLUS the JupiterEd signature sheet signed (due Monday, 9/11)

THURSDAY, 9/7: Getting to know one another
We did three getting to know each other activities:
- 3 Things About You index cards
- Three4We (pod groups of four identified three things they have in common, creating "we" statements)
- Tower Talk (we played a version of Jenga with colored beams and answered "get to know you" questions based upon the beam removed from the tower)
Coming up next time:
- Select seats for Chart 1; first Song of the Day; Letter to me; Syllabus stuff.
